Coolum Beach Books

I was asked to participated in a small book exhibition at the Cooroy Butter Factory earlier this year.  Curator Maryke Stagg asked artists to show photos of themselves working in their studio environment, she wanted the work to reflect this sense of place.  As I have recently moved to live in Coolum Beach I decided to do work relating to the beach on which I walk most days.

I had been photographing my beach walk for some time and I created the book Coolum Beach to incorporate all the aspects of walking on the beach and behind the dune area.

I also conducted some experimental work with papers painted and drawn on, on the actual beach, using items found there for brushes.  Luckily that day I found sponges washed up, not regularly found on the beach but not that unusual, and feather.   So some great tools to work with.  After applying the drawing to the surface I allowed the waves to gently wash over the work…changing and adapting the image.
