I always enjoy drawing while I am away from home, often in little books such as this one. I first made the book, and then worked on the pages to create a base on which to draw. I was keen to try and find a way to link the female and male aspect of war. Most of the memorabilia has a very masculine feel to it…guns, bullets, men’s uniforms, medals, photos of men in war, tobacco tins…. I was looking to show how the stories of the men in battle was inextricably linked to the women at home, their mothers, wives and girlfriends, and daughters.
