Turkey
12 x 17 x 2 cm 100% cotton paper - rusted, ink & acrylic paint, linen thread Helen Sanderson In 1997 I went to Turkey on a tour with artists and art lovers, organised by a gallery in Sydney. Afterwards they held an exhibition of miniatures, and I was invited to put something in. I entered this travel journal.   The drawings include images from inside the hamam in Istanbul, and at the dawn service at Gallipoli. One of the men who also went onto the trip bought it.   Many years later, I ran into he and his wife, and he told me he felt bad about having my little treasure….and he assured me that one day, he would give it back to me before he died.   I thought little of it.   A decade later, I had a phone call telling me that my book was on its way. David Bryant died a couple of days later. This gift has been of great significance to me. The unexpected generosity of my books return at such an extraordinary time, and the desire he had to remind me that my work was of significant worth and value have all been greatly appreciated and very humbling.   All artists need to have their works liked and appreciated…and bought!   David understood this, and gave to me all three.     I have thought long and hard about what to do with this book in the intervening years, given that he especially wanted me to have this book.   I can’t keep this book forever, and I feel it would be nice if the book and the story, could be kept somewhere safe. This gift to me encapsulates something very important for me, and I would like to keep that gift going, by donating this book to the State Library of Queensland, in his memory, to say thank you, both to him, and also for the support the SLQ has given to me as well, and remind people of the importance of patronage to the arts.
